The Irrigation System Behind One of Golf’s Most Iconic Courses

Maintaining one of the world’s most iconic golf courses requires more than expert agronomy. At Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, it also depends on precision irrigation technology that helps the maintenance team respond to changing weather, conserve water and deliver the consistent playing conditions expected at one of golf’s most celebrated venues.

Founded in 1891, Shinnecock Hills is one of the oldest golf clubs in the United States and a founding member of the United States Golf Association (USGA). The course has hosted six U.S. Opens and is widely recognized as one of the game’s premier championship venues.

According to Rain Bird, the club’s long-standing partnership with the irrigation manufacturer has evolved over more than two decades. Today, Superintendent Jon Jennings and his team utilize an integrated irrigation platform that combines CirrusPRO™ central control software, IC System™ technology, low-angle sprinkler heads and Spectrum™ soil moisture monitoring to make informed irrigation decisions across the property.

The system allows staff to quickly adjust irrigation based on changing wind conditions, moisture levels and daily course demands while reducing unnecessary water use. At a coastal course like Shinnecock, where wind and weather can shift rapidly, the ability to precisely manage irrigation plays a critical role in maintaining firm, healthy turf throughout the season.

“Golf courses face tremendous pressure to deliver excellent playing conditions day in and day out,” Jennings said. “Shinnecock Hills and Rain Bird have a relationship dating back more than 20 years. Having the quality and expertise of Rain Bird’s products and services gives me peace of mind.”

Rain Bird says the integrated system gives superintendents greater visibility into soil moisture and irrigation performance, enabling them to apply water only where and when it is needed. The result is improved water efficiency while preserving the championship-quality turf conditions expected by members and tournament organizers alike.

The partnership also reflects a broader trend across the golf industry, where advanced irrigation technology is becoming an increasingly important tool for balancing course conditioning with long-term water stewardship.

“We are honored and excited to be designated as the exclusive irrigation supplier for such a prestigious golf course,” said Stuart Hackwell, director of Rain Bird’s Golf Division. “Our relationship has been excellent, and we look forward to taking it to new levels.”

As golf facilities continue to face increasing expectations around sustainability, labor efficiency and resource management, Shinnecock Hills demonstrates how modern irrigation technology can help superintendents protect both championship playing conditions and one of the game’s most historic landscapes.
