Restoring a golf course designed by one of the game’s most influential architects is no small task, especially when that architect was also your mentor. For Tim Liddy, Fellow of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), the renovation of The Bridgewater Club was both a professional challenge and a personal tribute to the late Pete Dye.
Liddy worked alongside Dye for nearly three decades and played a key role in the original design of the Carmel, Indiana, course when it opened in 2005. The recent restoration focused on modernizing infrastructure and improving playability while preserving the strategic principles that have long defined a Pete Dye golf course.
Rather than redesigning the layout, the project concentrated on maintaining the course’s original routing, strategic angles, green complexes and visual character. The goal was to enhance conditioning and sustainability while ensuring golfers continue to experience the thoughtful shot-making and decision-making that are hallmarks of Dye’s work.
Among the most significant improvements was the complete reconstruction of the greens. The renovation upgraded drainage, agronomic performance and long-term consistency while preserving the strategic relationship between approach angles and putting surfaces that Pete Dye carefully crafted.
Additional enhancements included:
- Renovation of every bunker with new shaping, drainage and sand.
- Seven new forward tees to improve accessibility and enjoyment for golfers of varying skill levels.
- Installation of advanced turfgrass varieties selected specifically for central Indiana’s growing conditions, including new bentgrass greens and improved fairway, rough and bunker-face turf for greater durability and drought tolerance.
Throughout the restoration, Liddy emphasized preserving Dye’s architectural language, including bold bunkering, visual deception, strategic options and thoughtful risk-reward decisions that continue to define many of the world’s most recognizable golf courses.
The completed project positions The Bridgewater Club to provide exceptional playing conditions while honoring one of golf architecture’s greatest legacies. By combining modern construction practices with a deep understanding of Dye’s philosophy, the restoration ensures the course remains relevant, challenging and sustainable for future generations.
