One of the Midwest’s most historic collegiate golf facilities is receiving a major upgrade as the University of Iowa moves forward with an $11 million renovation of Finkbine Golf Course.
The project, funded entirely through private donations, will modernize the 71-year-old public course while enhancing its role as the home facility for the University of Iowa’s men’s and women’s golf programs. The renovation is being led by golf course architect Scott Hoffman, whose growing portfolio includes acclaimed projects such as Lost Rail Golf Club in Nebraska and Mapleton Golf Club in South Dakota.
Finkbine’s transformation is driven in part by the need to replace its aging irrigation system. Rather than simply updating infrastructure, university officials elected to pursue a comprehensive redesign intended to improve playability, sustainability, and long-term course performance.
Among the most significant changes are expanded fairways, reduced irrigated rough acreage, and the installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system equipped with environmental sensors designed to reduce water consumption while improving turf conditions. The project will also incorporate sustainable turfgrass technologies intended to lower maintenance requirements and operating costs.
Course officials say the redesign seeks to create a layout that serves a broad range of golfers, from recreational players and juniors to collegiate athletes and elite competitors. The renovated course will remain open to the public, continuing a tradition that dates back to the facility’s opening in 1955.
Finkbine has long been a fixture in Iowa golf, hosting Big Ten Championships, the Ben Hogan Tour, and the popular Amana VIP Pro-Am, which attracted notable figures including former President Gerald Ford, Joe DiMaggio, and Mike Ditka.
Construction is underway, with the reimagined course expected to reopen in 2027. Upon completion, university officials believe the renovated facility will rank among the premier collegiate and public golf destinations in the Midwest.
