Woodmont Country Club is excited to announce ownership has approved the 2nd phase of golf course upgrades for the back nine of the Cypress Course starting May 2025. The 1st phase was completed in the summer of 2024 and the newly renovated front nine holes opened to the public in October 2024.
The project was undertaken by Jemsek Golf Design and marks a return to Woodmont after their work to rebuild the Pines 9-hole course in 2016. “The revival of the Pines in 2016 was a great project, but coming back to work on the Cypress in 2024 was very exciting” said Joe Jemsek, Golf Course Architect. “Ownership gave me the resources to rebuild the course with the best infrastructure and freedom to be creative with my designs.” The front nine has seen the total reconstruction of the greens complexes, bunkers, tees, and significant work in some fairway areas. The new design starts with the movement in the greens, reconstructed to USGA standards, and the contours radiate out into the surrounding features. Bunkers have been realigned, providing room for other features like short grass swales and mounds. Previously, errant approach shots were captured mostly by sand bunkers, but after the redesign, golfers are finding new challenges which require them to be more creative in their recoveries. Joe continued, “I’ve taken inspiration from Robert Von Hagge best’s designs and mixed it together with modern concepts of golf design to emphasize player enjoyment.” Beyond the new greens replanted with ultra dwarf Tif-Eagle, the bunkers are the standout in the design. The white sand has been flashed high with artistic and dramatic edges. Woodmont was one of the first courses to utilize the Capillary Flow system inclusive of the Capillary Edge, a synthetic grass edge, around the bunker perimeter which will maintain the integrity of the design long after the project is finished. “The freedom to be imaginative with bunker lines was really made possible by the Capillary Flow System under the sand. It gave me confidence to be bold in the design, knowing the bunkers will hold up under the intense rainfall and won’t be a burden on the grounds staff” noted Jemsek.
Another notable addition includes the new 150’ “Surrey Wall” added in the fairway of the 8th hole dividing the elevated 3rd landing area from the second on the dog leg right par five. Utilizing the natural coral rock that is found just under the surface on the Cypress Course, the wall has certainly gained attention in post round recaps at the club’s 19th hole. “In a place like South Florida, where it can be difficult to differentiate golf courses due to the notoriously flat and undefined land. The changes made to Woodmont Country Club distinguish it from basically any other course in the area” explains Lee Shapes, Director of Golf at the Club. “These changes and the ones that will also come with the renovation of the back 9 of the Cypress Course this summer will make Woodmont Country Club a golf course you certainly won’t soon forget.”
The second phase will see the back nine of the Cypress Course undergo the same enhancement this summer. Work will continue to rebuild the nine greens complexes, reshape surrounds, rebuild the fairway and greenside bunkers complexes, expand tee options and even including a unique stacked sod wall bunker. When asked about the upcoming work, Jemsek remarked. “The greens complexes have always made Woodmont stand out since its inception. On the back nine we have more room behind the greens, which will allow us to recreate some of the approaches adding intrigue.”
