TerraRad Tech announced today that it has completed the first shipment of its turfRad moisture sensors to eight innovative golf courses in the United States.
In total, 18 sensors were delivered, primarily in the western part of the US this week.
“Our mission is to enable sustainable and efficient use of water, beginning with golf courses. TurfRad will improve playing conditions while saving water, time, and energy.” said Dr. Derek Houtz, CEO of TerraRad Tech. “We’ve adapted satellite technology into an extremely user-friendly product for golf course superintendents and their staff. Mounted on mowers or utility vehicles, our L-band radiometer sensor provides actionable maps of the moisture content in the rootzone of the turf, unlike anything currently available on the market”
The course receiving the sensors include:
“I also want to acknowledge the important role ASB taskTracker has been playing in the marketing of our products,” said Dr. Houtz. “They’ve opened doors for us through their extensive network of courses and they will be involved in ensuring that our customer feedback loop is strong and that we are constantly improving our offering.”
The unique turfRad sensor measures long-wavelength microwaves naturally emitted from the earth. The magnitude of these emissions is proportional to the water content in the upper 4 inches of the soil.
The sensor and software package allows superintendents to direct watering operations in a more efficient manner; conserving water and ensuring a sustainable future for the game of golf.
TerraRad Tech is a Swiss startup company and a spinoff from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) within the domain of ETH-Zürich. Our company arose out of research in earth observation and remote sensing. We offer drone- (UAV), vehicle-, and ground-based systems for golf, agriculture, and research fields. Our systems have been used in 5 continents from the Amazon to Antarctica, for a wide range of sensing needs. Representatives of Terra Rad will be on hand at The Memorial Tournament on June 1 to 4 at Muirfield Village Club. Feel free to visit for a demonstration of turfRad.
