Rockwind Community Links set to debut in May (Mar 26)

March 26, 2015 – Golfers in southeastern New Mexico will welcome the 2015 season when the highly anticipated Rockwind Community Links has a May grand opening of the City of Hobbs’ 27-hole municipal golf facility that is destined to be acclaimed as one of the finest in the region. Embracing the name “Community Links,” the focus of the entire project will be to “link” the golf course into the fabric of life in Hobbs. The top priority of the project is to provide a place to bring families, kids and beginners together via the game of golf.

Rockwind Community Links, designed by Andy Staples of Staples Golf Design in Scottsdale, Ariz., will include a championship 18-hole course, a 9-hole par-3 course, a practice facility, a short game practice area and a full-service clubhouse. Rockwind also is a proud First Tee site.

“On behalf of the City of Hobbs, we are pleased to announce that the new Rockwind Community Links will soon open for the enjoyment of our city residents and golfers from throughout the region and across the country,” said Hobbs city manager J.J. Murphy. “We are the first ’community links’ project in the U.S. and we will show that golf facilities can do more than just attract golf enthusiasts.”

The main course, which will offer five sets of tees with playing lengths ranging from 7,100 yards for the accomplished player down to approximately 4,200 yards for the forward family tees, has been designed to embrace the flat nature of the southeastern New Mexico landscape, keeping irrigation to a minimum and the turf fast and firm. The new design provides challenging features such as elevated greens, coffin bunkers and rock walls rolling throughout the golf course reminiscent of a typical Scottish links golf course.

The 9-hole par-3 course called Li’l Rock is meant to complement the expanded practice range and short game area. It was built to facilitate walking, families, beginner golfers and kids. The length of shots range from a sand wedge to a driver.
