OSU post-grad student wins grant

An Oregon State University master’s student in the College of Agricultural Sciences was one of three students nationwide to be named a winner of the Watson Fellowship Program.

Tod Blankenship is a graduate research assistant in OSU’s turf management program. His research focuses on water use with cool-season turfgrass species. Blankenship is a certified golf course superintendent, and has worked in the turfgrass industry for 15 years. He is still working on his thesis, and recently accepted a position as a golf course superintendent at Trappers Turn Golf Club in Wisconsin.

Blankenship received the award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for his work in the field of golf-course management, according to the GCSAA.

OSU’s turf management program has launched the careers of superintendents in many of the top golf courses in the nation, and has set the standard for sustainable turf management in the Pacific Northwest.

In addition to a $5,000 grant, the Watson fellows received an all-expenses-paid trip to the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show held in Orlando in February.
