Old York Road Country Club Weathers Ida with Capillary Bunkers

Darren Farrar, Golf Course Superintendent, Old York Road Country Club in Ambler, PA

Old York Road Country Club in Ambler, PA, is a premier golf course that will test all aspects of a golfer’s game. And the grounds crew likes it that way.

In 2020, they began a golf course improvement plan that included the installation of Capillary Bunkers, the worldwide leader in golf course bunker renovation. Little did they know the real test would come the following year during Hurricane Ida.

“After visiting several sites and studying the installation process, we decided to move forward with Capillary Bunkers.

Holes 1, 10-18 were finished this off-season. Our staff worked diligently to install all 250 yards of Capillary in-house.

Then in August, Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc in our area. The golf course received 7.5 inches of rain. Capillary performed extremely well compared to our un-finished bunkers.”

When it comes to playability and consistency on golf courses, keeping the bunkers tilled, raked, and repaired after heavy rain takes time and effort. Fortunately, the days of using a shovel for daily bunker maintenance are over.

Capillary Bunkers helps with moisture control and decrease the risk of plugged lies and washouts. It also aids in the prevention of soil contamination and provides an ideal playing condition.

Along with moisture control, utilizing Capillary means an instant decrease in labor costs. Instead of several days of repair after a storm, golf course maintenance professionals spend only a few hours on spot raking.

With some newly renovated bunkers, Old York Road is ready to test more golfers. The Par 71, 6500-yard layout features tree-lined fairways and challenging greens. Forgiving off the tee, the course difficulty lies in hitting precise approach shots and putting the fast, undulating greens.

Their grounds crew takes special pride in keeping the course in pristine condition, meaning it’s regularly hailed as one of the most well-maintained golf courses in Philadelphia.
