Island Welcomes Top Golf Professionals for 17th Playing of Puerto Rico Open

Championship Course at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande

The PGA TOUR has arrived for the 17th playing of the Puerto Rico Open this week, when many of the world’s top players – and four Puerto Ricans – will compete for a share of the $4 million prize purse and 300 FedEx Cup points on the Championship Course at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande. The tournament winner will earn $720,000.

Puerto Rico Tourism Company is the title sponsor and has partnered with the PGA TOUR for years, highlighting the destination, its golf and other Island attractions, and generating substantial charitable donations.

Since 2008, the Puerto Rico Open has been dedicated to giving back to the community, reflecting the Island’s and PGA TOUR’s commitment to making a difference. More than $4.2 million has been donated to organizations that impact thousands of lives across the Island through the tournament. The 2024 Puerto Rico Open donated $235,000, which directly benefitted 20 nonprofit Island organizations.

“As the title sponsor, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company is proud to reinforce its long-standing commitment to the Puerto Rico Open, an event that continues to capture global attention while positioning our Island as a premier golf destination. This tournament is not only a showcase of world-class talent, but also a powerful engine for tourism growth and economic development-both of which are top priorities for Governor Jenniffer González,” said Willianette Robles, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.  “Since the first edition in 2008, the Puerto Rico Open has positioned itself as the Island’s leading golf event, amplifying Puerto Rico’s presence on the international stage and generating meaningful impact year after year.”

“We are pleased to continue our longstanding partnership with Puerto Rico Tourism Company, which has been a tremendous supporter of the PGA TOUR, and the Puerto Rico Open for the last 17 years,” said Tyler Dennis, Chief Competitions Officer, PGA TOUR. “The PGA TOUR appreciates Puerto Rico Tourism Company’s continued commitment to this proud event, and we look forward to producing another memorable event later this week in Rio Grande.”

Host for the tournament, Grand Reserve Golf Club is an amenity of the ocean-front, amenity-rich Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve. It regularly hosts top-flight golf tournaments, illuminating the Island’s golf-destination merit. Participant organizations include the PGA TOUR, United States Golf Association, R&A, Augusta National, American Junior Golf Association, and numerous college programs.

“That these leading golf organizations choose Puerto Rico for their events illuminates what visitors can expect when watching and playing golf here,” said Glorianna Yamin, VP of Marketing, Discover Puerto Rico. “Spectators and visitors enjoy seeing elite golfers play on one of our 18 courses. They love playing amid our breathtaking Island views. The swaying palm trees, teal-colored surf, and rainforest ridgelines provide an inspiring, sun-kissed setting that makes Puerto Rico a special place to experience the game.”

The 2025 Puerto Rico Open is set to crown another champion amid the tropical splendor for which the island is revered. Some of the PGA TOUR’s biggest names and rising stars have won or placed high on the leaderboard, including Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, and Jason Day.

Puerto Rico will be represented in the field by Chris Nido, 26, who turned pro in 2020, and three rising-star amateur players – Reinaldo Simoni, 21, Gustavo Rangel, 21, and Kelvin Hernández, 19. Nido played in the 2024 Puerto Rico Open and finished 9-under par, tied for 49th. Hernandez has represented Puerto Rico in international competitions, including the Toyota Junior World Cup in Japan, and has won titles such as the Caribbean Junior and Caribbean Amateur Championship. Rangel currently plays for the Loyola University (Baltimore, Md.) golf team for which he helped win the Patriot League Championship. And Rangel competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship

Rafael Campos, the only current PGA TOUR member from Puerto Rico, isn’t playing in the event this season as he earned a sponsor’s exemption into the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, a Signature Event, that is being played opposite the Puerto Rico Open this week. There are eight Signature Events in 2025, limited-field events featuring top players with increased prize money ($20 million) and FedExCup points (700 points to the winner).

Campos became the first Puerto Rican to win on the PGA TOUR last November since Chi Chi Rodriguez won eight times on the game’s biggest stage. Just days after becoming a father, Campos broke through to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The title secured his PGA Tour membership through 2026 and earned him entry into THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters Tournament, and other prestigious events.

The Puerto Rico Open is airing on multiple channels Thursday through Sunday of tournament week including Golf Channel (USA) with streaming on the NBC Sports App and NBCSports.com. In the region of Latin America, Golf Channel Latin America will provide coverage in Spanish.
