January 15, 2015 – Iron Knob Golf Club has been successful in obtaining a grant as part of the state government’s Active Club Program.
A cheque for $3000 was handed over to the club to help it with ground maintenance, equipment and club promotion.
Iron Knob Golf Club president Ray Wheeler said the club was pleased with the continued support it had received from the state government.
“We really appreciate the assistance and support we have received,” Mr Wheeler said.
“We’re looking forward to starting the golf season in April.”
Mr Wheeler said the grant would primarily be used to purchase new equipment for the course and maintain the grounds.
He said the club hoped to be opened for the start of season in April as members were just waiting for the ground to mature.
The club began relocating last year thanks to support from Arrium Mining.
Mr Wheeler said he was impressed by how effectively Arrium had worked with the club to ensure the longevity of golf in Iron Knob.

“I have nothing short of full respect for all Arrium employees involved in these negotiations – the respect and professionalism shown towards myself and the golf club has made the whole experience enjoyable and rewarding,” he said.
Mr Wheeler said Arrium and the club were now working together to coordinate appropriate mine blasting times that would not interfere with the club’s matches.
“We will cohere with Arrium about special events coming on so they don’t do any blasting around those dates,” he said.
The season will begin at the start of April until October.
