Golf outing helps Detroit schools

TODAY’S SUBJECT: Bush Seyferth & Paige hits the links for Cornerstone Schools.

THE CAUSE: Cornerstone Schools opened to students in August 1991 with a mission of “changing Detroit one child at a time.” Cornerstone offers independent and charter schools, providing children the skills for life and leadership. By providing an 11-month school year with highly qualified teachers, Cornerstone realizes a 95% high school graduation rate and 91% of its graduates continue their education after high school.

ON GIVING: Since 2005, Bush Seyferth & Paige has hosted a charity golf outing in support of local children, donating the money for scholarships to participate in growth and specialty programs. This year marks the first partnership with Cornerstone Schools, though the firm’s partners have supported Cornerstone students through other programs provided by the school.

“Every child should be afforded the opportunity to get the support, education and life skills they need to lead successful, productive lives,” said Patrick G. Seyferth, partner of the Troy-based law firm.

BACKGROUND: Bush Seyferth & Paige partners have a tradition of supporting child-focused programs for the past 10 years. Prior to partnering with Cornerstone Schools, Bush Seyferth & Paige hosted a golf outing each year for the Foundation for Exceptional Children, which provided supportive education to children with special needs. From 2005-08, the firm raised more than $100,000 for the organization through the events. To date, including the new partnership with Cornerstone Schools, Bush Seyferth & Paige has raised more than $150,000 to help children reach their full potential.

RESULTS: In its first year, the Bush Seyferth & Paige/Cornerstone Golf Classic raised more than $25,000, providing funding for scholarships within the school. Bush Seyferth & Paige and Cornerstone plan to make the Golf Classic an annual event to further support the education of urban children.
