Golf Courses Teaming Up For Their Sport

Seven golf courses in Grand Junction are joining forces to get more locals interested in golfing.

“This meeting is a preliminary to get everybody on the same page,” general manager at Redlands Mesa Golf Club Tad Holloway said. “It’s something that’s never been done and we’re looking at golf days, golf sales, demo days, and we’re working together in every way, every facet, to make things better.”

And one of most discussed topics in the meeting was a way to get more kids involved in the sport.

“We feel that golf is a great game, it has some good values, morals as well a lot of business skills and things like that,” Grand Junction head golf professional Mike Mendelson said. “It’s just good for the children.”

Another topic on their agenda, was to get the local courses on board with a Colorado golfing school program.

“It’s a state wide incentive to reach out and get golf professionals in the schools to actually go in the school and teach children how to golf that wouldn’t normally be introduced to the sport,” Mendelson said.

Officials say they are happy with what they have started and they also see their plans benefiting the western slope in the future.

“I’ve been in the golf business for 15 years,” Mendelson said. “This is the first time we’ve actually had a meeting with golf courses from around the valley and I think it’s going to be exciting just to see what everyone has. They’ve got things that they do at their golf courses and to see some of that going across the valley and hopefully we can just keep spreading it around and generate more golfers for everyone.”
