Georgia GCSA Names Scholarship Recipients

Tommy Hewitt, scholarship committeee chairman announced that a record 10 students received the 2018 Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association (Georgia GCSA) Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship offers educational aid to children and grandchildren of Georgia GCSA members. The awards are funded by the Georgia GCSA and sponsored by Jerry Pate Turf and Irrigation, Inc.

Hewitt, from Windermere Golf Club in Cumming, GA led scholarship interviews held at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta with help from Sam Welch, The Golf Club of Georgia, Jamie Pate of Jerry Pate Turf and Irrigation in Atlanta, Mike Brown, The Standard Club in Johns Creek and Chuck Underwood, CGCS, Northwood Country Club in Lawrenceville.

Applications were reviewed independently by the Georgia GCSA scholarship committee. Criteria for selection included: academic achievement, extracurricular and community involvement, leadership and outside employment. Students were required to submit one essay.

One or more of the applicant’s parents or grandparents must have been a Georgia GCSA member for five or more consecutive years and must be currently an active Georgia GCSA member in one of the following classifications: Class A superintendent, Class B superintendent, C, Retired Class A, Retired Class B or AA Life. Students must be enrolled full-time at an accredited institution for the next academic year.

This year’s recipients were:

Walt Morris – Stepson of Tim Busek, The Manor Golf & Country Club, Milton, GA (Top Scholar)

Leah Barton – Daughter of Bret Barton, CGCS, Pinetree Country Club, Kennesaw, GA

Amber Cavender – Daughter of David Cavender, Cobblestone Park Golf Club, Blythewood, SC

Lukas Freeman – Son of Doug Freeman, Indian Hills Country Club, Marietta, GA & The Orchard Golf & Country Club, Clarksville, GA

Austin Geter – Son of Jimmy Geter, CGCS, AA Life

Kayla Hendricks – Daughter of Michael Henricks, Nob North Golf Course, Cohutta, GA

Sam Hunt – Son of William Hunt, Athens Country Club, Athens, GA

Hannah Kepple – Daughter of Ralph Kepple, CGCS, East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, GA

Ashley Wilder – Daughter of Gary Wilder, Club Corp, LaGrange, GA
