At an elevation of 9,500 feet, where nighttime temperatures routinely dip into the 20s well into spring and the golf season lasts barely five months, achieving tournament-ready greens by May 1 has long been considered nearly impossible.
A new field report from GreenJacket reveals how Breckenridge Golf Club has consistently overcome those challenges, producing high-quality putting surfaces as much as six weeks ahead of normal seasonal expectations.
The report details the experience of Golf Course Superintendent Alex Kosel and his team, who deploy GreenJacket Clear Permeable Covers across all 29 greens each spring to accelerate soil temperatures and promote earlier green-up, even in one of the most demanding golf environments in North America.
“Greens in very good condition and ready for play by May 1st, which is unheard of for us at 9,500 feet of elevation,” said Kosel. “It’s really a no-brainer after seeing the results year after year.”
According to the field report, Breckenridge’s covered greens routinely emerge vibrant and playable while snow remains visible throughout the surrounding mountain landscape. By trapping solar heat and allowing strategic watering to increase soil temperatures, the cover system creates growing conditions that dramatically accelerate spring recovery and turf development.
Among the key findings highlighted in the report:
For mountain golf facilities and courses facing intense seasonal weather challenges, the Breckenridge experience demonstrates how proactive turf management strategies can significantly extend playability and improve spring course conditions.
“Guests are blown away at the product we can provide so early in the season in our climate and elevation,” Kosel said. “It’s really a no-brainer for us after seeing the results year after year.”
