People at Shawnee’s Tomahawk Hills Golf Club are taking an old clubhouse and turning it into new opportunities for area families.
The building is slated for demolition, but teams for Habitat for Humanity are being allowed to dismantle and salvage as much of its core materials as possible.
“We’re not just taking the doors off,” said Habitat for Humanity’s Jason Thompson. “We’re also getting all the hardware, outlet covers and switches.”
The materials will be sold at a couple of Habitat for Humanity stores in Kansas. The nonprofit organization uses the money to build or fix up affordable homes for families.
“You hear some of the stories of the homeowners. It’s just such a great feeling,” said Thompson.
He said he hopes that those types of feelings inspire others to join the effort, which benefits more than the families.
“We’re going to try to salvage as much as we can and keep it out of the landfill,” he said.
The old clubhouse dates to 1910. Randy Knight of the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department said sustainability is another reason why not everything is being thrown away.
“We could have done that, and of course, we have the vehicles to have done that, but then all this stuff would have ended up in a landfill,” he said.
Organizers said they’re looking for more volunteers to help salvage what they can from the old building. Anyone willing to help can call Vanessa Little at 913-342-3047 or visit theHeartland Habitat For Humanity website
