Adam Mis, with over three decades of experience in golf course management, recently marked his two-year anniversary as the greens superintendent at Transit Valley Country Club in East Amherst, N.Y. Let’s delve into Adam’s journey, his vision for Transit Valley, and the exciting developments taking place under his leadership.
Adam’s interest in golf course management sparked during his high school days in Highlands, N.C., where he worked at Highlands Falls Country Club. Initially starting as a bag boy, he found his passion working with the grounds crew. Despite a brief detour to study architecture in Florida, Adam returned to his roots and graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in turfgrass management. His career took off, leading him to various superintendent roles in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C.
Adam joined Transit Valley during a pivotal time, with the club undergoing a major clubhouse renovation and emerging from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In just two years, membership has grown significantly, providing the club with the resources to undertake substantial projects. The upcoming full-course irrigation project stands as a testament to the positive changes taking place under Adam’s guidance.
Adam’s strategic approach includes a master plan, developed in collaboration with an architect, to enhance Transit Valley further. In-house tee renovations aim to position the club as a family-friendly destination, fostering interest in golf among younger generations. The planned irrigation system upgrade and bunker renovations underscore the commitment to maintaining the property’s excellence.
What sets Transit Valley apart, according to Adam, is the remarkably experienced staff, including former superintendents. With 23 years in the Buffalo area, Adam values the connections he has built and recognizes the unparalleled expertise within his team.
Despite the challenges, Adam finds fulfillment in the camaraderie of the golf industry. Building lasting connections and witnessing the tangible results of hard work contribute to a satisfying career. He also expresses joy in the positive trend of more women entering the industry.
Adam emphasizes the importance of communication, teamwork, and alignment with club leadership. Clear communication ensures a shared vision, fostering a collaborative effort that ultimately eases the superintendent’s responsibilities.
Outside of work, Adam cherishes time with his family, particularly his daughter, a dedicated volleyball player, and his two grandchildren. He shares a passion for cars, boating, and travel with his wife, Suzanne. Despite busy schedules, the couple recently enjoyed a trip to Paris for their anniversary.
Established in 1921, Transit Valley has evolved into one of New York State’s premier golf courses. From its humble beginnings to hosting legendary golfers like Walter Hagen, the club boasts a rich history. Ongoing renovations, including a new irrigation system in 2023, reflect a commitment to maintaining excellence for years to come.
Adam Mis’s leadership is steering Transit Valley Country Club towards a bright future. With a focus on strategic improvements, community engagement, and a passion for the sport, Adam’s vision ensures that Transit Valley remains a distinguished name in the world of golf.
