If you were going to create the perfect pesticide, where would you start? You would make it easy to use, specific to the pests that you were trying to control, biodegradable so that it would not persist in the environment, free from a lot of extraneous matter, have a low probability of developing resistant species of the target pest and harmless to non-target species like wildlife, pets, plants and, of course, humans. With this in mind, Ecological Laboratories, Inc may have reached a new level with its new product MICROBE-LIFT BMC, biological mosquito control.

While there are other Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) products on the market, few has achieved the level that Ecological has with its MICROBE-LIFT BMC. First, it’s an easy-to-use liquid, making it easy to customize the dosages to any size pond. The liquid form also disperses readily. Like all Bt products, the BMC works through a crystalline protein produced by the Bacillus - in this case, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. In fact the Bti species in MICROBE-LIFT BMC is one of the most potent of all the Bt products on mosquitoes. Like most proteins, after a period of time in the environment it is broken down and recycled to the biosphere, unlike many chemical pesticides which can persist for years.

A pesticide is no good if the target insect develops resistance to it. Well, that has been shown to be the case with many chemical pesticides. Natural selection doesn’t take long. However, a recent article in Nature: Biotechnology has shown that the potential for developing resistant species to Bti is almost non-existent.

Finally, and most importantly, the BMC doesn’t hurt anything that it’s not supposed to affect. About the only things affected other than mosquitoes are black fly larvae and the larvae of certain nuisance aquatic midges. As for your pets drinking out of the same pond, there is absolutely no effect whatsoever.

The EPA has even approved the use of MICROBE-LIFT BMC in bird baths and livestock tanks. They have even been given approval to say the BMC controls the mosquitoes that transmit the West Nile virus, heartworm in dogs and cats and Equine encephalitis.

Based on all evidence and research, MICROBE-LIFT BMC has certainly raised the bar in the biological controls marketplace. For more information on the research explained here, or for more information on the MICROBE-LIFT BMC product, please contact Ecological Laboratories.
